My toddler is an artist…. or at least she thinks she is, and every surface in my home is fair game to her. So, when making over this bedroom for her, I decided to give in, and paint her very own chalkboard wall in her room!
I planned to re-paint the entire room, so I started by taping off the section I was going to use for her chalkboard.
I am using Rust-oleum Brand Chalkboard paint, in Black. Seriously, is there anything Rust-oleum paint can’t do?! I bought a quart of this paint, and had plenty leftover when done, for whatever wall my toddler decides to draw on next 🙂
I should mention, I made sure my tape lines were level and square. I knew I would be adding trim to the edge of the chalkboard, so I wanted to make sure the lines were straight. Here is after the first coat. It looks pretty splotchy, that’s ok. Let it dry completely before the next step.
For the second coat, which provided a much more even surface, I decided to go all the way over to the corner, it ended up being about 4′ x 4′. I also removed the tape to allow for the paint to dry. I didn’t worry so much that my paint edges were straight for this coat, I knew the trim I would be adding would cover it.
After the second coat, I allowed the paint to FULLY dry. After about a day or so, I “seasoned” the chalkboard. This is just a fancy way of saying I applied chalk all over the board and then wiped it off with a clean, dry rag. This is recommended by Rust-oleum so when you are using the chalkboard, the chalk comes off easily in the future (aka – makes clean up a little easier)
Using my 2 foot level, I added the trim pieces around the whole thing. It provided a nice frame to the chalkboard. I left the wood trim unfinished, since it matches the toddler bed I built in the room. I used pin nails to secure the frame in place.
So far, she really likes having the chalkboard in her room (and no, she doesn’t limit her “artistry” to ONLY this wall, but oh, well… you win some, you lose some.)
